When I am not writing, I am reading, and I can’t think of a better place to spend the afternoon cozied up with a novel and a homemade chai than at Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore.
What is it?
Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore is the quaintest bookstore in Paddington’s Art Precinct and is a staple for many literature lovers who like getting lost in the pages. Ampersand is a pre-love bookstore and has floor-to-ceiling shelves, holding over 30,000 carefully considered used books! This three-story bookstore has multiple corners and rooms for you to crack open something new whether it be something for your kids or an antique book for you. And if you find yourself getting hungry, you can order a delicious meal from the adjoining cafe. In conversation with book enthusiast and lovely owner Irene, I found out Ampersand cafe has a full kitchen, offering a wide variety of breakfast and lunch options. You can order something healthy like their house-made cold pressed juices or tofu scramble or something delectable like their Ampersand cheeseburger and shoestring fries. I am currently on a cleanse, so a book with a side of cheeseburger sounds AMAZE.
What makes it unique?
The people at Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore value community and understand the importance of supporting and working with locals. They offer exclusive discounts for those who work on Oxford Street to ensure they are saving a little bit everyday around lunchtime. They also buy pre-loved books for cash or credit everyday from their local community. If you have any books that need a new home, be sure to take them to Ampersand where they are destined to get picked up!
How do I get it in my life?
You can find this bookstore at 78 Oxford Street amongst some of Sydney’s most exceptional shops and eateries.
What’s the #insidertip?
Well, I’ve mentioned it before, but I would like to affirm you cannot pass up their homemade seven spiced chai! Irene said they make their own fresh almond milk daily which is the perfect base for rich flavors of cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon (and a few more, but I can’t give away their secrets). Oh, and if you are looking for something a bit sweeter, their chocolate brownies and caramel slices are famous in Paddington!
You can’t deny that a cafe and bookstore is a match made in heaven. I know what I will be doing this weekend! 👏🏻 Be sure to follow these guys online, and let us know in the comments below what you are reading at the moment!
