During my travels in Italy, I had gelato at least three times a day. It was everything I imagined authentic Italian gelato would be. Five years later, I have found a slice of Italy in Perth, Chicho Gelato; new wave gelato that is #winning!
What is it?
Founders Carly and Chez left pharmacy and the corporate scene to study the art of making gelato in Bologna with a dream of shocking the world with new wave gelato del chicho! After ample taste tests, night markets, and festivals, these two gelato lovers opened their own stunning gelateria in Perth’s thriving Northbridge suburb.
Chicho Gelato isn’t serving up your average flavours. I am talking innovation at a consumable level. When visiting, you should expect some epic flavours like Malted Milk Cornflake Cookie, Eggnog gelato, and Avocado Candied Bacon (yeah, I said candied bacon!) all made in-house. Note: not all of these delicious flavors are permanent menu items. Some are limited runs, so you should get it while the gettin’ is good!
What makes it unique?
Quality is a top priority: no artificial ingredients or colors. These enticing flavours come with an extensive list of ingredients, and at Chicho, they take the initiative to use only the best ingredients available, sourcing from local West Australia farmers. For Carly and Chez, quality also means freshness which is why they focus on making small quantities every morning and administer them from the traditional pozzetti. This is a dark well with an opaque lid that keeps the gelato from oxidising and is the traditional Italian approach to storing gelato.

What’s the #insidertip?
According to my inside source, you can’t go wrong if you order Pistachio, Burnt Butter Popcorn, or Salted Caramel Crack. Pistachio has always been a personal favorite of mine, but something tells me all of their flavours are the bomb! Also, if you plan on being a regular, be sure to look out for their chef collabs and limited dessert specials.
