Wine Matching Evening at Lab Bar + Restaurant

Thursday night lead me through the grand doors of the stunning heritage Treasury building that is home to the Lab Bar + Restaurant. I love me some fine dining, so I jumped when the opportunity to attend the Taylors wine dinner came up. The restaurant staff were extremely generous with the wine, and not just for matching with each course. My glass was filled at entry, and stayed that way during and between each course until our goodbyes at the end of the evening. It would be a slight understatement to say I was a little tender the next day, but it was all kinds of worth it.

So let’s talk food, shall we? Does it make you jealous to read that the menu covered courses like seared kangaroo, celeriac, poached pear, fresh raspberry and cacao jus matched with 2012 Taylors Jaraman Shiraz? Or how about macadamia crusted lamb, sweet potato, baby turnips, minted cucumber, shallot jus matched with 2012 Taylors Jaraman Chardonnay? I tried other beautiful proteins like quail ballontine, glacier 51 tooth fish (so buttery – ah-marrzing) and mouth-watering venison. The exquisite foodie experience was topped off with apple and rhubarb strudel, Breton crumbs, vanilla and lime anglaise foam with a raspberry reduction paired with a sweet Riesling.

I was placed at a table with a fantastic group of interesting strangers who became good friends over the course of the evening. The conversation and laughter alone was worth going for – the amazing food and wine was just a very welcome bonus.

At the end of the evening we met our utterly talented, 26 year old chef Lauren Curmi. She wandered around and chatted with us all individually, radiating humility and an obvious passion for her craft. I place a lot of value in sustainable produce, so it made my heart sing to hear that Lauren does her darndest to source her produce and meats locally and prefers sustainable practices.

The Lab Bar + Restaurant hold wine dinners from time to time and I highly recommend keeping an eye out for their next Penfolds evening (date TBC). There’ll be one more wine event to follow before the Treasury moves into 2015 – their 20th birthday year! My advice to you is have a light lunch that day, and drink lots of water. You’ll thank me for it later!
