Beauty Tuesday: Summer Hair Trends

Happy 2016 BT readers, and welcome to our first blog post of the new year! We can’t wait to see what’s in store in the coming months!

In the spirit of Beauty Tuesday, we’re kicking off the year with a round-up of our favourite summer hair trends with the help of our friends from the Paul Mitchell Artistic Team. So without further ado, here are the styles and trends to covet this summer when it comes to your ‘do.

Short Crops

Style wise we are seeing a return to shorter styles for the summer months. From blunt lobs to pixie cuts and textured layering, look to celebs such as Lara Bingle, Zoe Foster Blake and fashion blogger Sara Donaldson if you’re considering a chop.

Some things to consider: 1. Shorter hair is great on people who want to accentuate facial features, so it is not a great option for those wanting to draw attention away from the face. 2. If you’re not game enough to have a dramatic crop, go for a heavy blunt edge on a mid-length style. 3. Wearing mid length hair in a textured wavy style will shorten your overall style and create the illusion of a shorter bob. Try Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray to add texture.

 Pastel Shades

Pastel hair shades are one hair trend that always seems to resurface in summer and this year is no exception. For summer 2016 soft pastel tones are in vogue on the runways, high streets and beaches. To change it up, add a pastel top coat to your balayage or natural all-over tones to change the hair’s hue. We can’t decide if we fancy it, but grey seems to be trending right now. What are your thoughts?

Some things to consider: 1. Pastel hair requires a generous amount of upkeep to ensure your colour remains fresh and vibrant, so it is important to be realistic about how much time (and money!) you have to invest in its maintenance. 2. Consider pastel balayage as it requires much less upkeep. 3. Seek professional advice to ensure your home maintenance system is suitable for the longevity of your colour. Movement And Texture

Forget your straightening irons this summer, because the season ahead is all about the tong! Say goodbye to straight subtle hair and hello to soft flowing movement. Whether its beautiful beach waves or glamorous Hollywood curls, summer 2016 will see a sharp shift towards free flowing movement that accentuates natural waves and curls.

Some things to consider: 1. Always use a heat protectant like Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press when using tongs to create waves or curls. 2. Gorgeous soft curls can be taken from day to night and back again by incorporating soft braids and low slung ponytails. 3. Brushing curls out with a brush will create a diffused wave, while  a wide tooth comb will create a more controlled Hollywood wave.

The Top Knot

We couldn’t end without mentioning our favourite summer hair trend – the humble top knot.  There’s no rhyme or rhythm to create a top knot, just simply lean forward and pile your hair up into a messy bun on the top of your head. If you really want to up your style credentials, embrace the “half top knot” style leave the bottom half of your hair out and pile the top section into a top knot. It’s the best of both worlds!

Some things to consider: 1. Use bobby pins to secure any loose strands at the back of your neck. 2. The bigger and higher, the better (in most cases). 3. Believe it or not, you can take a top knot anywhere, no matter the occasion by adding some simple accessories: statement earrings and a bold lip for a night out, or neutral tones and denim cutoffs for a weekend vibe.

There you have it, 4 summer hair trends to covet this season. Which one will you try?
