The countdown is well and truly on for the 2014 Paniyiri Greek Festival and organisers want your help! This year looks bigger and better than ever with ten days of festivities culminating in the grand Paniyiri Greek Festival, to be held on May 24th and 25th.

You don’t need to know how to dance the Zorba, Sirto, Kalamatiano and the Sousta or know how to play the bouzouki, tarabuka and lira – you just have to enjoy culture and be prepared to have a very good time. Organisers are looking for volunteers to assist with various tasks and events, so if your interested you should definitely email or call 3356 6810. It’s the perfect opportunity for budding creatives, students, lovers of culture and members of Brisbane’s Greek community.

For those of you who, like me, have previously missed the marvel that is Brisbane’s Paniyiri Greek Festival then read on, because after this you’ll never want to neglect this event again!

Paniyiri is a colourful and uber tasty festival to mark Australia’s longest running Greek Festival, complete with honey puff eating, Zorba dancing, plate smashing, bouzouki playing and Greek recipe sharing. Other activities of the festival include grape stomping, olive sampling, eating competitions, Hellenic dancing, new cooking master classes, comedy skits and the imfamous Greek Dancing with the Stars that includes Channel 7 personalities. Based at the famous Greek Club and Musgrave Park in West End and South Bank, the kaleidoscopic cultural explosion is now legendary with over 50,000 people attending the event every year.

Established in 1976 by a group of passionate Greek Australians who dreamt of bringing the tastes, sights, sounds and atmosphere of Greece to the streets of Brisbane, the festival has become an annual event for Greeks and non-Greeks living in and around Brisbane. And with more than 30 food stalls showcasing the culinary secrets of Greece and traditional Greek dancing performed on the main stage, this festival is one not to be missed.

Now are you tempted?

Prepare your tastebuds, get your dancing shoes and get ready for a whirlwind of cross cultural celebrations in the heart of Brisbane. And don’t forget to volunteer!
