Spotlight On: Lisa Brown

It’s been a fortnight since we put the spotlight on Brisbane label Soot, so this week, we headed south to tell you a little bit about Gold Coast based designer Lisa Brown and her self-titled label, Lisa Brown. Lisa Brown the label grew from humble beginnings and is inspired by vintage collectibles, so there is no wonder the Australian made label is now stocked in boutiques around the country. When it comes to Lisa Brown and the upcoming (soon-to-be-released) SS16 collection, think gypsy bohemian meets island goddess with loose and lightweight shades in bold pattern and statement colour. So sit down and grab a cuppa as you get to know more about Lisa Brown and her local label.

BT: What inspired you to start your own label?

LB: I couldn’t afford to buy the garments that I liked!

BT: What is the process of designing a new collection?

LB: I normally use three different methods of design. By drawing my ideas and discussing with my pattern maker; by cutting out basic shapes and sewing; and design by draping the fabrics onto a mannequin.

BT: What do your customers love most about Lisa Brown?

LB: My label appeals to women who appreciate luxurious fabric and Australian made products. They love that they can throw the garment on, walk out the door and feel beautiful.

BT: What is your background – did you always want to be a fashion designer?

LB: Having older sisters who were interested in fashion is where my interest began. It wasn’t until I began working in fashion in my mid 20’s that I decided this is what I wanted to do. Since then, I have worked hard to achieve my goals.

BT: What is your favourite piece from the current Lisa Brown collection and why?

LB: Marlene Print Shirt dress from my Spring//Summer 15-16 collection (below).

BT: Describe the Lisa Brown muse in one sentence…

LB: A woman who is not afraid to express her personality and appreciates beautiful fabrics and detailing.

BT: Can you tell Brisbane Threads one fun fact about you…

LB: The first garment that I every designed was a daggy pair of bright yellow shorts when I was in grade 7
