Interview: Jessica Lambert of Lambert Designs

Look out ladies! There is a new jewellery label in town… and one look is going to max-out that newly paid-off credit card!

I stumbled across this gorgeous label at the Winn Lane Ladies in the Lane event a couple of weeks ago. Jessica Lambert was one of the first smiling faces to greet me in the lane and when she drew my attention to her table of jewelled beauties I was instantly interested. THEN when she modestly told me it was only the second time her work was on display I was gobsmacked! The quality, design and attention to detail in each piece was second to none… and her set up was as professional as they come! I couldn’t wait to pick her brain on the collection and her story…. hope you enjoy the interview x

1. What inspired you to start a jewellery label?

I have never really bought jewellery. I have always made it myself. Last year I was forced to take it easy for a period of time and couldn’t work my normal job for a while. I had been toying with the idea of starting a jewellery line for years, however, it wasn’t until last year that I made the decision to put my ideas into practice and give it all I’ve got. I strive to create a unique experience for the LAMBERT consumer and thrive on clever and original ways of expressing whichever passion you choose to work with. Having run my own freelance business in the past, I admit I also enjoy the freedom of being my own boss and pushing the boundaries of what I believe I’m capable of intellectually, creatively and from a business perspective.

2. What is the label’s mission statement?

LAMBERT is about creativity and experience. It is about emotion and mood. It is about women and their ability to be confident, independent and sophisticated whilst also being light-hearted, fun and adventurous.  LAMBERT is about expressing yourself creatively and dressing to the beat of your own drum. It’s all fun!

3. Each piece looks so unique, Tell us about the materials you use…

Thank you! Every piece our customers buy is direct from my work bench. I make every design by hand (though at times I’ve been known to rope in a family member or three to help! Thanks guys). I work with base metals, semi precious stones, bone, horn, Swarovski Crystal and gold-plate. My workroom is completely covered with interesting bits and pieces…. I have many-a-trick up my sleeve for down the track. So stay tuned!

4. Who would you love to see a piece of the collection on?

So many! Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Lauren Hutton, Rose Byrne, Christine Centenera, Miroslava Duma, Taylor Tomasi Hill and Racheal Taylor come to mind. These women epitomise strong, independent, creative, confident women who know who they are. This is what LAMBERT stands for. There are many, many more women I would love to see a piece worn by on a world-wide, national, local and personal level. What a great feeling.

5. What is your background?

I studied Photography at the Queensland College of Art. Working as a fashion photographer and stylist is where most of my experience lies but I have also worked within production and art department in the Film and TV sectors. I thoroughly enjoyed that time of my life and may be doing something similar now if I wasn’t starting LAMBERT.

6. What is your favourite place in Brisbane to eat/drink/shop?

Eat- Sono, Anouk, Enoteca, the Oxford street Sushi train in Bulimba and a little Thai place in New Farm called Siam Square. Drink- I’ll admit I don’t go to bars much so I don’t really have a favourite. Anywhere that offers me a great atmosphere, interior, view and of course drink menu. Shop- James street- so many great stores that offer such a variety of beautiful product and the many second-hand stores around town that I always find fantastic things at.

7. How do you think living in Brisbane influences your label from a creative and business perspective?

Not to sound cliché, but, I don’t think it matters where you live because creativity is something that comes from within. Space and aesthetically pleasing surrounds is key for me or I feel stifled emotionally, physically and thus creatively. Brisbane seems to offer me space to explore my imagination and the space and resources to deliver results that are relatively pain-free. Brisbane is a great place for emerging artists and designers. There is such a plethora of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit here. Rent is relatively cheap compared to other major cities in Australia so we can afford bigger spaces to work. This is a huge factor when you’re starting a business and/or working as an artist. For me, space is key to a clear and fertile mind!

8. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Blue skies and sunshine!

9. What is your secret indulgence?

Embedding myself in my imagination can be pretty indulgent at times! My mind is always thinking of my life and where I would like to take it. A life filled with love, luxury and locations! I am a collector. I like to surround myself with beautiful things- the ‘things’ that reflect my life. Whether it is stones with amazing patterns and texture I have collected from the beach, gorgeous embellishment on textiles and clothing or hand-made colourful pottery that has been chipped with use, these are all things that I find indulgent and beautiful

10. How can we purchase your items?
