In a past life I studied Fashion Design at QUT and Gardams Fabrics was my ‘go-to’ for inspiration for whipping up a saturday night frock to catch up with my girlfriends. Years later and whilst my time to make party dresses has certainly diminished, Gardams was still my go-to. Needless to say when they closed their doors a month ago, it was hard to answer the question, ‘Where to now?’.
Well fabric lovers, THEY ARE BACK! But only for a limited time only, at the Gardams Fabrics pop-up boutique!
Though a Sunshine Coast retirement beckoned, the customers, buzz of the city and the love of design screamed even harder!
“Retirement’s been put on hold,” says proprietor of Gardams Fabrics, Dorothy Gardam. “We received dozens of emails and telephone calls each week after we closed, both old and new
customers, seeking exclusive quality dress fabrics,” she says. “Our customers told us they were devastated to see us go: some begged us to come back.”
“There were even some tears!” she adds.
Responding to this demand, but wanting to maintain a healthy work/lifestyle balance, Dorothy and husband Ewan Gardam looked at alternative retail options.
While looking at the nuts and bolts of an online operation, the opportunity to curate a pop-up boutique in their old tenancy at 288 Edward Street arose.
How could they turn it down? They’d just sourced a gorgeous cruise line (not available anywhere else in Australia) – perfect for a November pop-up boutique in Brisbane.
And there are exclusive Gardams Fabrics favourites, and one-off specials, to share.
It seems retirement will have to wait a little longer. Not that we mind!
