Fashion Graduate: Jacqueline Curran

The pressure of assessment is over. The sleepless nights sewing detail after detail.. all finished. Uh-oh… but what now?! We have a quiet chat with Jacqueline Curran a recent QUT Fashion graduate about her final collection and life after uni! P.S. She’s a one to watch – the collection is ah-MAZZING!

Collection Name:

Mirror Animal

Collection inspiration:

Mirror Animal explores the integral relationship between humans & animals, looking at the idea that animals can function as mirrors of our own animal nature. The collection recreates the beauty, pride and elegance of the animal kingdom with innovative textures and stylised colour combinations to pay homage to creature character.

So you’ve finished uni… what now?

With a double degree in Marketing & Fashion, I’m lucky enough to now have a number of different paths I can take. But first of all, I want to start by getting as much hands on experience as possible in a variety of fashion and creative marketing positions, and hopefully from this I can work out exactly which of these paths to take further in the future.

If you could be mentored by any fashion authority in the world, which would it be?

Sarah-Jane Clarke & Heidi Middleton from Sass & Bide

What would be your first question of them?

Where do you get your inspiration that enables you to design unique collections season after season without ever being predictable?

What do you think your biggest challenge will be now?

With so many other talented young designers in Australia, it’s hard not to feel like a needle in a haystack sometimes. My biggest challenge will be taking the risks needed to stand out and get noticed.

How do you think living in Brisbane will influence your next career steps?

I love Brisbane because of its supportive, close-knit community, and while it may be a small industry, I have learnt to make the most of every opportunity that arises, simply because you don’t know how few chances you will get. I think the same attitude will guide my next career steps as I hope to tackle any and every door that opens.

Also, Brisbane’s beautiful weather and surrounding beaches has single-handedly inspired my love for swimwear and resort wear design, and I can see this as something I want to hold on to as a passion in the future.

What do you want the world to know about you?

Success in this industry may sometimes rely on who you know, but I believe the most satisfying path to achieving your dreams comes from your own hard work, determination and passion.

If I was a genie and could grant you 3 wishes… what would they be?

  1. For every city in the world to have weather like Brisbane
  2. For my sewing room to magically clean itself
  3. A never-ending supply of fabrics!
