Day One: Creative3 Forum 2013

Phew! What an action packed day! This year I was lucky enough to be granted a bursary to the Creative3 Forum from Creative Innovation. The Creative3 Forum is a full two-day experience encompassing a series of dynamic presentations from the world’s leading creative game changers and entrepreneurs that offer insight into the mechanics of creativity, enterprise and investment. With a blend of interactive sessions, keynote speakers, hands-on workshops, networking events and evening festivities, Creative3 is designed to spark collaboration and inspire individuals to execute their ideas.

Well that was the pitch…. so what ACTUALLY happened..? So. Much. MORE!

The line up of speakers was phenomenal… Mitch Olson; Kate Kendall; Stephen Phillips; Jess Huddart; David King Lassman; Rick Chen; Liu Yan; Lisa Messenger; John Hummelstad; Fady Mishriki and Patrick van der Pijl.

The day kicked off with some light networking over a cup of coffee and a lolly bar. I ran into the lovely Lani from Yelp Brisbane and met some new startup friends.

After some traditional proceedings we got stuck into the official program. The first speaker Mitch Olson was hilarious. Sharing with us his (made-up) business of Fashion Designer Pirate Clothing, Mitch connected with the audience through humour, but took us on the journey of entrepreneurship. Mitch cited the following 5 steps as central to a startup.

1. Self-authorship

2. Empathy

3. Invention

4. Stretching

5. Pride

Next up was Brisbane-girl (who has recently made the move to New York) Kate Kendall. I was actually most excited about seeing Kate, I’ve been following the progress of her startup for sometime and am a subscriber of her business The Fetch. The Fetch is an email digest of the best professional events in some of the major cities around the world… and little ‘ol Brisbane is right up there!

Kate spoke on de-cluttering her life, living out of Airbnb, moving to where the people can help you and that sometimes the best storytelling happened offline.

In the afternoon we heard from Lisa Messenger, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Renegade Collective. Renegade Collective is a print (yes an actual, physical, real) magazine focused on game changes, thought leaders, rule breakers and style makers. There are some absolutely inspirational stories in every issue and I love how it has remained un-cluttered with excess advertising, compared to other magazine titles available today.

Lisa shared some awesome insights into embracing risk and taking action quickly. Which takes a lots of guts!

Attitude is the most important quality for hiring creative staff. Skills can be taught. @lisamessenger

And of course no forum is complete without an evening soiree. Leveraging the amazing Brisbane Festival that is currently delighting our city, Creative3 took to the Santos DLNG Lounge for drinks, canapés and more fantastic networking. It also gave me a chance to explore some of the fantastic things going on in South Bank at the moment for the Brisbane Festival… live music, the Spiegeltent, fantastic light installations and delicious street fare.

I can’t wait for tomorrow’s proceedings where Patrick van der Pijl runs a full day workshop on business model methodologies. And P.S. There were so many other inspiring speakers today.. I could have kept writing forever… for more check out the Creative3 website here.
