5 minutes with Brisbane boy Jules Tognini

It’s clear that 2012 is going to be a massive year for Brisbane boy Jules Tognini. On the back of previous finalist success at the Hair Expo Awards, last week saw Jules awarded ‘Visionary’ and ‘Rising Male Star’ at the Hot Shots Hair Awards, a new awards event exclusively for hairdressers aged 30 years or under.

Jules was nominated for both awards, with his submissions including details about his approach to creative work, his key accomplishments, and his goals for the future. His outstanding ‘Floss’ collection was used as photographic evidence of his extreme creative talent.

Just last week, Jules and his togninis hair team were announced as finalists in four categories at the prestigious Schwarzkopf Hair Expo Awards.

As both Director of togninis hair and Salon Manager at AKA togninis, Jules was extremely proud of his wins, saying, “two awards…so cool!  Can’t wait to make this industry explode…2012 – let’s do it!”

We spend 5 minutes on the coach with this rising star to talk about his success and what it means to be a Brisbanite.

Hair obviously runs in the family… but what inspired you to make your own mark in the industry?

It sounds strange now but I actually tried to avoid the industry for as long as I could! But once I stepped into it there was no looking back – I had found my fit. I’ve learnt so much from my father (Benni Tognini), however I’m well aware there’s not enough room in this world for two Benni Togninis so I plan to pave my own way and put my crazy stamp on the industry.

What is your favourite hair trend for Winter 2012?

I am digging the 90’s grunge look at the minute. Raw and rocking!

What goals do you have for yourself over the next few years?

I plan to start a nation-wide education program and release a bunch of educational DVDs. I am also going to be flat out working in my role as evo haircare’s International Ambassador in Australia and overseas, as well as keeping all my radical clients looking good! 2012 has already seen me blessed with a few industry awards which has just been so incredible, so I’m pumped to get in there and see what else we can achieve this year!

What impact do you think living in Brisbane has on your career?

I love Brisbane. I think we have found our niche and it works. Having the salon (aka togninis) in Fortitude Valley is fantastic – it’s such a creative place and there are so many interesting people around who give Brisbane its funky, cool vibe.

In Brisbane where is your favourite place to:

EAT: Can’t beat the cheap and cheerful brekkie at ‘Lucky Duck’ at Highgate Hill. I can’t get enough of the epic Thai lunch at ‘West End Coffee House’, and for a chilled dinner head to ‘Crosstown Eating House’ at Woolloongabba.

SHOP: For some unique threads,  head to ‘Apartment’ in the city, and for great vintage furniture head to the ‘Woolloongabba Antique Centre’ – I could literally spend hours exploring that place!

RELAX: By the water is best. For a relaxing bevvy head to ‘The End’ bar in West End. You have to try their original rainbow beer on tap (insiders tip – you’ll want to leave your car at home!)
